Jesus understands the isolation of pain. Jesus understands that when we keep it in, it separates us from the rest of the world, like damaged goods. When we let our needs be known, we open up space in our soul for friendship. We create room for the whitespace of friendship. We give ourselves a chance for someone to enter our world.

Merrianne told me she got off work at 2:00 p.m. She’d come right away. That afternoon, I cried and cried and cried. I clutched on to her, choking tears into her arms, as we stood in the middle of a playground. While Josh and Caleb played on the jungle gym, I told her what I could.

Merrianne stepped into my story. She told me she could help watch the boys next week for a few afternoons, so I could lie down and see if I could sleep.

She gave me a place in this world to be wounded. To be me.
